Oldest person in the world, Emma Morano celebrates 117th birthday

The oldest person in the world, Emma Morano has turned 117 on November 29, 2016.

Morano is believed to be the only person born in the 1800s and still alive. She has lived more than a month of 1800, lived through out 1900s and still living in the 2000s.

Emma credits daily diet of raw eggs towards her longevity.

About Emma Morano

Emma Martina Luigia Morano was born on 29 November 1899 in Civiasco, Vercelli, Piedmont, Italy. Out of the eight children of Giovanni Morano and Matilde Bresciani, Emma is the eldest. She had four younger sisters and three younger brothers. It seems, genetics is in play of her longevity. Many of her family members had lived over 90 years of age. Her mother, an aunt and some of her siblings had turned 90. One of her sisters, Angela Morano was born in 1908 and died in 2011, age 102.

In October of 1926, Emma had married Giovanni Martinuzzi. She gave birth to a child in 1937. But the child died after six months of birth. After the death of the child, the marriage turned sour an in 1938 Morano and her husband separated. Despite living separately, they remained married until his the death of the husband in 1978.

Until her 115th birthday Morano was living alone in her home.

Secret of long life

When asked about the secret of her longevity, she said that she had never used drugs, eats three raw eggs a day. In addition to that, she also drinks a glass of homemade brandy, and enjoys a chocolate sometimes. Above all, she thinks positively about the future. She credits her diet of raw eggs and being single the main secret behind her long life.

In December of 2011, Emma was awarded the honor of Knight of Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by President Giorgio Napolitano. After the death of Maria Redaelli on 2 April 2013, Morano became the oldest living person in Italy and Europe.

On 13 May 2016, Morano became the world’s oldest person after a US resident Susannah Mushatt Jones, died at the age of 116. Morano is also the last living person verified to have been born in the 1800s. The Guinness World Records awarded the certificate to recognize her as the oldest person alive on 29 July 2016.
