Is it really the death or the rumors of the death have been greatly exaggerated?

In the Navigation Application, Google uses search engine to find addresses, Google Street View for photos of locations, and live traffic data in its turn-by-turn GPS software. The application is available in the new Droid phone. Let’s see some advantages and disadvantage of Google GPS attached to mobile phone.

Advantages of Google Maps Nav.:

It is a free service

Comes with phone and doesn’t need an extra gadget, easy to carry and you are less likely to forget it at home.

Real-time updating

Linked to the HUGE Google search database

Disadvantages:

It is device specific – only phone it supports now is Motorola Droid. More may be (are) coming but it will take time.

Multi-tasking – using GPS and calling somebody would be difficult. It would certainly add concern to the traffic safety.

Dedicated data connection is required – there are many places where Google service might not be available.

Mobile phones usually have smaller screen as compared to dedicated GPS. More the screen are better the details on the map.

Mobile phones’ smaller form factors usually don’t allow for extra battery (like iPhone). Constant use for long period of time might not be practical in some situations.

Google will certainly add advertisement in future. Would like smaller screen and ads in it?

GPS manufacturers knew it was coming. Sometime back, TomTom started offering its own mobile GPS application for iPhone for $100. But free application is lot more cheaper! It is to be seen if Apple will beg Google to make one for iPhone.

Official video on Google Maps Navigation:

Professionals would certainly go for standalone GPS but causal users like myself would certainly be happy with the new device and new application. Death is a harsh word; but it is sure that they wouldn’t sell like hot cakes anymore.

GPS manufacturers need to step forward in innovating their products, cutting the prices, and offer better value to the customers. It sure is not a dead end!

Most of the offers demand that the post should be at least certain number of words. It had always been a problem to count the numbers of words in my post. I used to write the post and copy it and paste in Microsoft Word just to count the words. That was not that convenient.

Then I decided to create a code in JavaScript to count words in a post so that I don’t need to leave the browser.

Now I can type the post and open the link from my blogroll in new window to paste and count the words before publishing it.

Let me count the words in this post: It is …

News on 27 March 2007 announced the unlimited storage capacity of Yahoo. Today I was welcomed by the following screen when I was logging in it.

Well, it seems it is happening for sure. Despite this big upgrade, the attachment sizes are still limited to 10MB for free accounts. I am wondering if it will bother a general user? 10MB is somewhat small when you talk about unlimited storage space. If you are compled to make maximum use of it there are software like HJsplit , a small and free software that allows you to cut a big file into small parts which can be sent as attachments in separate emails. But one needs to take considerable amount of time to send gigabytes of data with a free account.

One biggest disadvantage these email services have is that you have to log in frequently. They erase all of the emails if you fail to log in for some specified time depending upon the provider. In the long run, it’s nice that “unlimited space” is available, but common users like myself wouldn’t be able to make much use of the available space. I’ve had gmail for well over a year and have barely scratched the surface of my available space and I’ve made strides to fill it up. I have all sorts of backed up data in there. I don’t know what I will do with the unlimited space!

I had a really big text file and I didn’t know how to open it. Then I found this small software developed by David Pye. It helped me to divide the file into smaller pieces so I can keep open them and play around with. Apart from splitting files it can do lot of other useful things with text files.

It is a simple interface with all options squezed in one small GUI. It looks like the following screenshot without much menus and toolbars.

This software can be used to edit text files the easy way. Join or split files while adding, deleting or replacing text, change to upper or lower case, capitalise all words or the start of all lines, add text to the start or end of lines, remove leading or trailing spaces, add or remove blank lines, remove text blocks, alphabetise lines in file(s), split files at specified lines or text or into a specified number of files, works on multiple files and on files of unlimited size. I wrote this for my own use after I couldn’t find a program to do what I wanted, it’s extremely easy to use with a simple interface.

Some of the tasks it can do are listed as follows:

1. Remove leading spaces and tabs.
2. Remove trailing spaces.
3. Remove all blank lines.
4. Add a blank line after each line.
5. Capitalize the first letter of each line.
6. Capitalize the first letter of each word.
7. Capitalize all text.
8. Make all text lower case.
9. Sort the lines in the file(s) alphabetically.
10. Remove text from the start of each line.
11. Remove text from the end of each line.
12. Remove text from everywhere in the file(s).
13. Add text to the start of each line.
14. Add text to the end of each line.
15. Add text in a new line after each line.
16. Remove a block of text.
17. Replace text everywhere.
18. Join multiple files and include dividers.

You can also split a file in the following ways:-

1. Into a specified number of files.
2. Every X number of lines.
3. Split at the end of specified text.
4. The first 17 editing functions can also be included when splitting a file.

The software can be downloaded from the developer’s site.

With these sites around you can release a press-release on your first love or a break-up or even a statement that your can refused to eat your most expensive pet food.

I would appreciate comments on the reader’s comment on their experience with similar sites.
